UK puppy vaccination schedule (BSAVA and WSAVA guidelines)

The UK standard puppy vaccination protocol follows BSAVA Position Statements and WSAVA Vaccination Guidelines. Unlike the US, the UK does not routinely vaccinate against rabies -- but the primary course includes Leptospirosis as standard, and the kennel cough (Bordetella) vaccine is commonly required for boarding and daycare.

Lepto 2 vs Lepto 4: which does your puppy need?

In the UK, Leptospirosis (commonly called "Lepto") is included as part of the standard puppy primary course. Two vaccine types are available:

Lepto 2 (bivalent)

Covers Leptospira canicola and L. icterohaemorrhagiae -- the two historically most prevalent serovars in the UK. Suitable for most urban and suburban dogs with limited wildlife exposure. Brands: Nobivac L2, Versican L.

Good for: urban pets, low wildlife contact

Lepto 4 (tetravalent)

Also covers L. australis and L. grippotyphosa -- emerging serovars linked to flooding, rural environments, and wildlife. Provides broader protection but slightly higher adverse event rate in some studies. Brands: Nobivac L4, Versican Plus.

Consider for: rural dogs, swimmers, hikers, flood-risk areas

UK vaccine brands your vet will use

Unlike the US, where multiple competing brands are widely available, the UK market is dominated by a smaller set of licensed products. These are the names you will see on your vaccination certificate:

UK pet insurance for vaccinated puppies

Getting pet insurance at the puppy stage is the most cost-effective time -- premiums are lowest when the dog is young and has no pre-existing conditions on record. Most UK insurers accept puppies from 8 weeks of age. The primary vaccination course is usually not covered by standard policies (it is a routine cost) but illness cover begins once the policy is in place.

ManyPets (formerly Bought By Many)

UK market leader. Accepts puppies from 8 weeks. Clear policy terms, good wellness add-ons. Covers vet fees for illness and accident from policy start date.

UK vaccination FAQ

What vaccines do puppies get in the UK?

The standard UK primary course covers DHPPi (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza) plus Leptospirosis (either L2 or L4 serovars). Most UK vets administer these as a combined injection. Bordetella (kennel cough) is often added if the puppy will be boarding or attending daycare. Rabies is not part of the standard UK vaccination protocol -- it is only required for pet travel to other countries under the Animal Health Certificate (AHC) / Pet Passport system.

When can my puppy go outside in the UK?

BSAVA and WSAVA guidelines consider puppies protected two weeks after the second DHPPi+L jab. However, the WSAVA guidelines also recommend a final dose at or after 16 weeks of age to ensure full protection against maternal antibody interference -- meaning full protection may not arrive until approximately 18 weeks (16 weeks + 2-week wait). UK vets commonly advise owners to keep puppies away from unknown dogs and unvaccinated environments until 2 weeks after the second jab, which is typically around 12-14 weeks of age.

What is the difference between Lepto 2 and Lepto 4?

Leptospirosis vaccines cover different serovars (strains) of the Leptospira bacteria. Lepto 2 covers the two historically most prevalent serovars in Europe (Leptospira canicola and Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae). Lepto 4 also covers L. australis and L. grippotyphosa, which are emerging serovars linked to wildlife exposure, flooding, and rural environments. WSAVA acknowledges that L4 provides broader coverage but notes that both types provide adequate protection for most UK dogs. If your dog swims, hikes, or lives in rural areas, discuss Lepto 4 specifically with your vet.

Are annual boosters compulsory in the UK?

UK law does not mandate annual dog vaccination. However, many boarding kennels, dog trainers, and groomers require current vaccination certificates as a condition of entry. The WSAVA guideline is that core vaccines (DHPPi) do not need to be given more often than every 3 years after the first booster at 12 months -- but Leptospirosis and Bordetella require annual boosters due to shorter immunity duration. In practice, many UK vets offer a annual health check with Lepto + Bordetella top-up and only add DHPPi every 3 years.
